participial construction

Hello,

Are the following sentences correct?

1) As the letter was written in French, I couldn't read it.

----> The letter written in French, I couldn't read it.

2) Because it had been written in French, I coudn't read the letter.

----> Having been written in French, I couldn't read the letter.

What's the difference between using "was" and "had been" in these sentences?

Which is wrong?

Thank you,
