Participial clause--make sense?

I am starving, watching a program about food.

1. Is this a participial clause answering why?

2. Do you think its use here is slightly akward and a re-write is in order?

3. Were I to re-write the sentence with a different participial clause still answering why (read below), it no longer seems awkward. What does this tell us?

I am staving, having not eaten for 6 hours.
