Participating to or in?

I am not sure about the use of "participating to" in the following sentence:

"Human activities represents a major issue in our society by participating to global climate change and deregulation of ecosystems."

I was tempted to use participating in, but I am wondering if it will sound awkward or be grammatically wrong. Any help?

The correct preposition is "in", but the sentence is not grammatically correct. For example, "deregulation of ecosystems" makes no sense.

I think this is closer to what you want:

Human activity represents a major issue in our society because it contributes to global climate change through the destabilization of ecosystems.
