He participte in a conference.

1.Dr Reynold, a participant at the conference told us ...

2.Dr Reynold, a participant of the conference told us ...

I am not sure whether to write at or of in the above.

The gym where I train considers me as a member. Whether it is correct or not they talk about the members of their gym.

As a member of the gym, from time to time, I talk to the manager to make some improvements. For example, I suggest buying state of the art machines.

The only thing "wrong" with participant of the conference (I would use participant in the conference, in the same way that someone is in a meeting) is that the conference, in a metaphysical sense, doesn't exist independant of the participants. You can be a member of a gym because a gym is a permanent fixed structure which has equipment, etc. In principle, a conference

Some conferences take place annually.

I have participated in those conferences.

However, you touched on the permanent nature of conferences.

They change the venue. However, the conference focuses on the same topic.

Prepositions are funny things.

I would still prefer "Conference participants will attend the banquet." Why use extra words when you don't have to. But if you really wanted to use your structure then I'd probably use "of" or perhaps "at" but not "in."

Note that IBm extends and invitation TO you, not FOR you. (And it's a 5-star hotel.)

The word participant is a noun.

Members, boys, girls, directors, teachers, etc are nouns too.

You are free to use members of the gym, boys of our school, girls of our school, teachers of English etc.

I know a participant is ephemeral. After the conference you are no longer a participant.
