part ways

Do you say:

Part ways from it. Or

Party ways with it.

Thank you. Are both ok?

Top answer

No, I don't say those. 'part ways' should have a plural subject. Tom and Helen disagreed on everything, so they decided to part ways.

What if I'm talking about a watch that I've owned for a while but now decided that it's time to sell it to save up for a new car.

It's time to part ways from it. Or

Part ways with it.

This one sounds better, but I'm just guessing because the only way I use "part ways" is as I told you about earlier.

So you wouldn't say:

I'm sad to have to part ways with my baby.

And your baby is a prized possession you've had for a long time.

No. It just doesn't seem like something I would say. I suppose people use "part ways with ...", but I can't think of any time in the last five years when I've heard it or used it. I'd save 'leave' instead of 'part ways with'.

That doesn't mean anything significant, though.

Well, how about that! Emotion: big smile

Maybe I am socially deprived! I just don't hang out with the right people!
