Part of the enemy/beech woods

Hi

A woman got stuck in mud, it was raining.

Miss Mayfield pulled her

leg out of the sucking mire and, with difficulty, moved it

forward six inches and plunged it in again. And suddenly

the very weather was part of the enemy, to be faced,

scorned, tramped down. The thought made her move

more sturdily, and after a few more difficult steps the mud

and the water grew more shallow. She was on the highroad

again, between the beech woods. And the rain was

easing off.

Does it mean that the weather suddenly became part of the enemy? Does it indicate that it wasn't such a bad enemy anymore? I'm just not sure why the narrator said it was PART of the enemy?

Does "beech woods" mean "beech trees"?

Thanks

Hi Clive

So it just says that suddenly the weather became just part of the enemy which she had to face and scorn and tramp down. AND the thought that the weather was just part of the enemy made her move faster forward?

And the other part was probably someone else or something else?

Hi Clive

I wanted to edit my post but I couldn't.

I wanted to say that "suddenly she REALIZED that the weather was just a part of her enemy ... the other part was somewhere else.

Is it possible that she REALIZED that at that moment?
