Part of speech

What part of speech is "John" in the following sentence? They call me John.
I'm actually trying work through the grammar in Greek, where case endings are used. ?e ???e John. My teacher contends that both "me" and "John" are direct objects and thus take the accusative. I suspect that there's something implied: They call me [as] John.
