part and parts?

Hi,

I think you can say "This is a part or part of something" but how do we say when the subject is in plural and want to use the same grammatical form?

These are parts of those things.

These are the part of those things.

These are parts of those things.

It's hard to imagine how a singular part can be part of two things, so your middle sentence doesn't work for me - unless you can give an example of how you'd use it. Is there a diffierence between your first and third? I think these are parts of that puzzle you are working on.
