parents as a whole or as two persons ... ?

I wonder which sentence makes more sense to a native speaker -

My parents have been constant sources of comfort and strength through all of my ups and down  OR

My parents have been a constant source of comfort and strength through all of my ups and down

I would use the second one, but if you go to your parents individually, I can see how the first one could work.
