Is there a rule of thumb for something like this in academic writing?

The rule of thumb is that parenthetical remarks should be avoided. By definition, parenthetical comments are either off-topic or insignificant-- and therefore generally inappropriate to the composition of a more formal paper. If one needs to be included, then do away with the parentheses and incorporate the statement into the paragraph structure in a surer manner.

Then how about in formal writing.
