parenthetical element?

Hi,

I have problems using what looks to be a parenthetical element in a sentence. Should I include the words like 'one' or 'who' before the element?

A famous athlete, (one?? one who is?? who is??) known to have won much accolade, is coming home.
A friend of mine is a famous athlete, (one?? one who is?? who is??) known to have won much accolade.

I cannot account for all cases, but the words are usually optional, and the style is often better without them.
