Parenthesis

A simple question. It is becoming increasingly common in the documents I edit for Graduate students to contain consecutive parenthesis, i.e., (XXXXX)(xxxxx). When did this start becoming a common practice and how should it be done properly?

  • Generally speaking, it's poor style to write English prose that contains a single set of parentheses, and consecutive items in parenthese is extremely poor style that is almost ludicrous.
