For parentheses and M-dash which can replace parentheses for effect, it must not be grammatically integral to the surrounding sentence.
The thought of it- the anniversary- still manages to twist the knife. (The thought of it the anniversary still manages to twisted the knife)
The president and his assistant traveled by private jet. (The President and his assistant traveled by private jet.) This works either way.
The first example feels like it needs the parenthesis or dashes. (What do we call the contrast between these two structures- one clearly needs the separation vs the other.)
I'd just like to comment that writing full of dashes and parentheses can become annoying to the reader. They should especially be avoided in formal writing. Clive
