I am writing instructions and need to use parentheses within parentheses. Although the instructions are not sentences (they're all bullets or arrows to illustrations) can I correctly write: - Disconnect coolant hose from oil cooler at the oil filter and drain coolant (approximately 3 liters (0.792 gal.)) until it stops flowing; reconnect coolant hose The double parentheses is killing me!

There's nothing inherently wrong with using double brackets, although it is sometimes helpful to use a different sort of bracket for the "internal" one. As a student, I took a logic course that produced statements of the form:
((pvq).(qv(rvs)))
(Don't worry about the construction, just the brackets!)
