Paraphrase

the sum dr.coates managed to raise was extremely small, and it was largely because of this that he decided to abandon the idea of continuing with the research project.

transform the clauses after "and"choosing between

a- this was largely the cause for this

b- it was largely this cause why

c-this was largely the reason why

d- it was largely to this reason that

It was one of the questons in my exam. I spot for the correct answer -d but after that I understand that the correct is c ? Could somebody try to explain to me why c is correct and d is wrong ?
