Parallelism

The computer company announced that it would cut 10 percent of its workforce—more than 2.000 jobs—and expected to report a loss in its third quarter.

Guys,

ETS says above sentence is correct. But is it parallel .What is expected parallel to ? Can we assume Expected to be parallel with "would cut," as both are conditional verb?

Please help me to understand.

Thank you

You have it exactly right: It would cut X and [it] expected to Y. Calling them both conditional verbs seems a bit of a stretch, but I guess you can get away with it. The usage is clearly correct.

  • They're both finite verbs.
  • You can mix tenses and still be parallel: They said they broke it and will/would fix it.
