Parallel structure

Hi,

I have a question on parallel structure.

"The teaching assistants can explain the assignment and give you some tips."

In the sentence above, what parts are parallel?

1. "can explain the assignment" and "give you some tips"

2. "explain the assignment" and "give you some tips"

3. ambiguous (depending on context)

Thank you, Mister Micawber.

So, your call is #2.

Is it because of the context, or is it always so when auxV+V and V are paralleled?

Thanks.

"The teaching assistants can explain the assignment and give you some tips."

We must presume (based on semantics) that the auxiliary applies here; I cannot assume that for all possible cases, but offhand it seems reasonable to me for most of them.
