Paragraph from a story

Hi,
I'm an American. Although my native language is English, I was tutored Spanish as I was growing up. So to me or so I had thought my spanish was decent, but after moving to Argentina, I've realized that my Spanish is not up to par, got a distinct foreign accent, plus I tend to repeat myself A LOT.

Please tell me if the past perfect is used correctly and an explanation would be sweet.
