When the Jew was selling half of his well to Hazrat Usman (RA) he thought that he would earn more profit by making him (RA) a partner in his business. Hazrat Usman (RA), on the other hand, dedicated his share in the well to the people of Madina instead of selling its water like the Jew. After that, everyone made full use of his (RA) generosity and carried enough water to last for the next day also. Consequently, the Jew could not sell any water on his turn. Thus he learnt a bitter lesson and soon sold the other half of the well to him (RA) also.
