Mr. M., I''m not sure I agree here. To me, "My Mom punished me by making me paint the fence" implies that the person actually did paint the fence. If he didn't paint the fence, I think something like "My Mom told me to paint the fence as punishment" would be better, as it leaves unclear whether the fence got painted or not.
