How's the painting going?
Can I ask the above to someone that I know who likes to paint. If yes, would the question be understood to as though as was refering to one specific painting that he might be working on (which is not what I want), or just his painting in general? If not clear, could the question be asked in another way to mean the latter? Thank you.
