Paint

Hi.

What does 'paint' mean in:

" If he or she starts complaining about your activities, don't retaliate by painting your partner as a jailer, a warden, or an albatross around your neck."?

Means telling them in words that they are jailer, albatross, etc?

Thanks in advance!

just in your mind(remaining silent), or to tell him expressedly?

Either can be done. Which do you think applies here, and why?

Telling him expressedly is immidiately retaliating.concealing your painting and revealing it sometimes later is futuristic retaliation....

But maybe they mean the immediate one

Yes, I agree. 'Retaliate' means 'act against', not just 'think against'.

I think it was used in extended meaning.)
