Say eg My hand was paining me.

More common is eg My hand was hurting me.

For me, this is unnatural. The verb "pain" needs an object – the sufferer of the pain – and it is normally used for mental rather than physical pain. However, at least one dictionary says that this kind of use is permitted in North American English, and gives the example ‘sometimes my right hand would pain’.
