Pain

Hi,

"I have a throbbing pain in my head."

"I have throbbing pain in my head."

I came across both of these examples.

Is there any difference when the indefinite article is used? And are both of these acceptable?

Thank you.

Without the article, the speaker is giving the feeling a name. With it, the speaker is describing the feeling. I think I always use the article before it, unless it is something familiar like arthritis.
