That's what is my question, Kate.

...but haven't you come across "unpaid volunteers"? I have many times. And every time I ask myself how and why!?[6]

Hi,

I see 'unpaid' as just a way of emphasizing that they are volunteers.

Speaking as a volunteer on this Forum, I'm all in favour of this concept of 'paid volunteers'.

I think it might be for emphasis. Besides, many people may forget from time to time that volunteers do not receive pay for their services, so they are gently reminded, at the risk of redundancy.
