Paid / earn

I dont understand why in english uses 'paid' for financial loss and income.

In this sentece (I guess) Ecclestone earn 7.9 mln so why is written 'paid' ?
"The all income was $16 million, with chief executive paid $7.9 million - a 11 per cent increase."
