Paid a visit to

Hi, I'm a bit uncertain about the order of words, so would appreciate some help. I have these two options:

I paid a visit to the church every Sunday.

I paid the church a visit every Sunday.

Are both okay? The second to me sounds a bit more informal, do you agree? Which one is more common in American English?

Sorry for the many questions.

Both of your options are fine. Neither is more formal than the other. Both versions are common in AmE and in BrE.
