pace vs rate

Do pace and rate have the same meaning and are they interchangeable? If not, what is the difference in meaning btw them?

(Ex: It is difficult to keep us with the rapid pace of change.=It is difficult to keep us with the rapid rate of change. ?

Most people walk at an average rate of 5km an hour. =Most people walk at an average pace of 5km an hour. ?)

Thanks

I would not change them in your examples here, which are fine.

Yes there is a difference. Pace is time per unit of distance. You can run a 10 minute mile, But your rate is 6mph... the biggest difference is the faster you go your "pace" # gets smaller, 8 min mile is faster right? But with rate, the number gets larger.
