1. Could you tell me which one is right between 'their' and 'their own' in the following sentences?

In hell, miserable, starving people sat around the tables. Their arms were attached to long chopsticks above their elbows. The people tried to eat, but they couldn’t reach their mouths with [their/their own] chopsticks because they [are/were] unable to bend [their/their own] elbows.
