Own

Perhaps dogs are happy because they don't think so much. For us, on the other hand, it's quite different. This large brain costs us so much to own and operate, using something like a third of our metabolism. It's so important to our survival that our bodies protect it with a hard, bony skull.

In this sentence what does 'own' mean?

Thanks in advance!

Hi mariott! It's an odd phrase, but I'd say that here "own" means exactly what it says in the dictionary = to possess. The phrase "own and operate" is a phrase often used in English.
