Overwhelmed=Surprised

When something overwhelms someone is there then also an element of surprise in it, would you say?

Not necessarily. eg When her entire family died of yellow fever, Mary was overwhelmed by grief. Assuming it was a long illness, I don't see surprise here.

Not necessarily.

eg When her entire family died of yellow fever, Mary was overwhelmed by grief.

Assuming it was a long illness, I don't see surprise here.
