Vocabulary

overseas

Hi,

In Britain, 'overseas' is pretty well synonymous with 'abroad', because of geography.

I'd like to get comments on how 'overseas' is used in the USA, particularly with regard to Canada, Mexico and even S. America. I'm asking because I've recently heard several Americans refer to Canada as 'overseas' and I wonder if that was just an aberration.

Thanks, Clive

Hi,

One was from S. Carolina.

If I were back in the US, I myself would never refer to either Canada or Mexico,or even South America, as overseas. It would conceptually have to be across either the Atlantic or the Pacific. On the other hand, I can see those countries included in a general reference, for instance to overseas markets.

It's really hard for me to believe, Clive, that you've heard this from Americans enough times to cause you to wonder about us. As for the United States, Hawaiians might have cause to use the term, though it would surprise me if they did.

Hi,

Well, I did wonder, so I asked. Thank you for the replies.
