Overpopulation of urban areas has led to numerous problems. Identify one or two serious problems and suggest ways that governments and individuals can tackle these problems

The modern world is an inconstant place with rapid changes happening every day. This process of continual molting has both positive and negative impacts on Earthlings’ well-being. On the one hand, it creates many breakthroughs in numerous aspects of life. However, this also leads to an immense need of workers, especially in big cities. As a result, overpopulation has occurred in these urban areas, and are becoming a worldwide problem that causes many negative effects.

The first and foremost consequence of this massive population outburst is the rise in pollution. City population increases brings an escalating number of transport vehicles and industrial machines, which deals a significant amount of damage to the environment. For instance, the ever-rising quantity of carbon dioxide and other toxic gases released by human activities is one of the main factor triggering global warming and climate change. Not only the mutilated atmosphere, loss of freshwater is also a notable issue. According to UN-Water, “only 0.003% of all water on Earth is freshwater, and yet most of them are either unreachable or too polluted” to use.

To lessen the on-going environmental degradation, governments have already set up multiple campaigns to raise people’s awareness of their habitat and also encourage them to opt for public transport in order to minimize fume discharging. In addition, each individual can be a role model by doing what they can to prevent pollution in their neighborhoods such as cleaning their surroundings or planting and watering trees.

Another conundrum in major cities caused by population explosion is the regression of living conditions. It is already a difficult task for the authorities to maintain a consistent provision of shelters, nourishment, water, healthcare, and security before. As the number of residents is growing excessively, the burden is now magnified to almost unbearable. Thus, many people are living in squalor and coarsely constructed ghettos. Furthermore, population profusion also augment the imbalance between the demand and supply for different kinds of commedities, which upthrusts their price higher, aggravates the current situation in these urban localities.b

When it comes to tackling this problem, the authorities need to invest more money on improving old and establishing new social houses as well as reconditioning the infrastructure, only then can the accommodation demand be fulfilled. At the same time, family planning and birth control methods should also be generalized. Another possible solution for this matter is to increase employment offers and endow laborers in the suburbs to ease the population density in big cities.

Overpopulation is upsurging as a menacing issue to the whole world for its seriousness and strenuousness. Although it is not impossible to resolve, a lot of time and effort are still expected from both governments and individuals to relief the pressure from this challenging global predicament.
