Overlap

When I looked up the word 'lap' from dictionary.com it says:

'To lie upon and extend beyond a thing'

But something that 'overlaps' something else does not necessarily 'extend beyond it' does it?

Yes, it extends beyond the edge of the other thing, which is what is meant in the definitions of all. Lap : lie partly over or alongside of something or of one another Overlap : extend over and cover a part of Underlap : to extend partly under.
