Overflow in heaps

Is this sentence natural? I can't find 'in heaps' used like this.

The kids emptied the bottle of bubble bath into the tub. We came in only after it had foamed up/lifted and overflowed in heaps. We decide to clean it up tomorrow. When we came in the next morning, the bubbles had disappeared.

Thank you
