Over VS Above?

Please look at this sentence.

"Your grades are above the average"
"Interest rate of that bank is above 10 per cent"
Can't I replace "over" for "above" in those sentence?

What is the difference between "over" and "above". I think they are almost the same.
Couldn't you teach me what the difference is when they used as the meaning of "more than".

Thank you for your answers in advance.

"Your grades are above average" --Lose the "the," over would not work. "The interest rate of that bank is above 10 percent" "The interest rate of that bank is over 10 percent" --Add "The", either "above" or "over" works. Please don't ask me why, that's just what sounds right to me as a native speaker.

Thank you so much for your answers,Mr.Douglas Johnston.Alone your pointing out that I can't replace "over" in "above average" would be of big help to me. I will think for the difference between "over" and "above" by myself if nobody teach me it further. Thanks once again for your answers,Mr.Douglas Johnston
