Grammar

Over Vs above

Hi:

Are the following two both correct in grammar and meaning? Do they have differences in position of hands relative to the head?

1. I put up my hand over my head.

2. I put up my hand above my head.

Thanks very much!

  • Above and over can mean "higher than".
  • We'd rather use "above" when describing that one thing covers another.

Above and over can mean "higher than". We'd rather use "above" when describing that one thing covers another. Actually put up is used as a phrasal verb and none of its meanings fits your example.

I put my hand on my head. (Your hand lays on your head).
