Over and above inflation

over and above
in addition to a particular amount or thing "Pensioners will receive an increase of £5 per week over and above inflation." -- Cambridge Idioms Dictionary

If it were something like 'over and above yearly increase' then it would have make sense to me. I don't understand the meaning of "inflation" in the above setting. Could you please help me with it? Thanks.

"Adjusted for inflation" is a very common concept.

Governments have "official" ways of calculating these things. Not everyone agrees.

Economic studies often compare the cost of food today with the cost of food 50 years ago, but allowing for inflation. What would it have cost in 2010 dollars?

Thank you, Avangi. Then, in my opinion they should have used the expression 'adjustment for inflation' to make it more clear.

Pensioners will receive an increase of £5 per week over and above the adjustment for inflation.
