Neither of them makes much sense though, you would pump it 'quickly' and if you are going to the trouble of storing it why for only a short period of time?

You must read it in context. It's describing a process for CO2 sequestration. They can sequester large amounts of CO2 very quickly for long-term (geological time frames) storage underground.

Scientists and engineers working at a major power plant in Iceland have shown for the first time that carbon dioxide emissions can be pumped into the earth and changed chemically to a solid within

This is not very well written at all though, is it? Is the CO2 being pumped very slowly - unlikely. Does it languish in some underground chamber for three months until it spontaneously solidifies? Or is it continuously recycled? (Not that I really care!)

Answering my own question, apparently it is pumped into ' deep geological formations' where the magic happens. Who knew?

Engineers and scientists are experimenting with techniques to quell the emission of greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The increased concentration of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere is forecast to cause global warming and a whole mess of unpleasant consequences, such
