This is a dialogue from a US movie produced in 1932. The detective is not speaking to the Hotel clerk, but to his chief, the Police Lt. Burton. So, I don't think that your guess makes sense here. I listened to it again and he doesn't say line; he says clearly "word".

Thanks, enoon. I think you are right. The sound was very bad and it wasn't clear if the detective said "word", "work" or "wire". But only "wire" makes sense.

Anonymous what is the definition of '' out of frame " guy ?A movie consists of a sequence of still photographs something like a rapid slide show. Each "slide" is a frame. If a thing is out of frame, you can't see it, but you can still hear it. It's like lines delivered offstage in a play.
