Outlier

Sujoy Ghosh's Kahaani was an outlier, a thriller that kept you on the edge of your seat till the credits rolled.

How do we know that "outlier" is not a describing( adjective) word but a naming word( noun)? Why indefinite article used before "outlier" and "thriller"? Can we put numbers before both?

As the definition says a noun is a naming word- a person, place, thing, or an idea. So it an idea type of noun an "outlier" ?
