Outfoxed?

I was reading the following paragraph after the Hero of the story managed to escape from the deadly shot of his enemy "Greyfox" and "Greyfox" died in the process:

"It was his own doing Barney! Greyfox thought he was so clever ... But in the end, he only outfoxed himself!"

What is the meaning of outfoxed here as it is also the title of the story.

Thanks in advance.

w=outfox&ls=a ]OUTFOX[/url]. The meaning is unchanged, but here the writer chooses this word for his character's speech because it is a nice pun on 'Greyfox'.
