Out of vs of

what's the correct way

Out of all the people that this could have happened to it had to happen to me.
Of all the people I could have sat next to, I had to sit next to him.

The second is definitely correct because I studied this at courses and I remember it clearly as if I'm back at my classes again now.
Something is telling me that the first one is also correct.
