Which of the following is or are correct?

The lift/elevator is out of order or is broken

The fridge/washing machine is out of order or is broken

They all make sense. For an official or formal notice, e.g. on a lift, "out of order" would be the norm. When talking about an appliance in one's home, "out of order" might sound a little highfalutin.

"elevator" is AmE; "lift" is BrE.

out of order This term usually is used for devices that are used by the public, or by many different people.

For devices in my home, I usually say It's not working. I rarely say It's broken.
