I have read this on one of the newspapers. what does "out of blue" mean?

"Out of the blue, I recently received an invitation from"

Hi, Out of the blue (note the article - it is vital) means "all of a sudden, unexpectedly" In your case, you did not expect to receive an invitation from somebody, but nonetheless you received it and it was a surprise to you.
