Out /down usage

Hi,
This is a small part of a text.

he poured out a drink for
himself and quaffed it down.

what happens if I say like this

he poured a drink for
himself and quaffed it

what is missing in the meaning?

Hi, It's fine . The words 'out' and 'down' just add some emphasis to the actions. Clive

Not in the two cases you quoted.

Note also that 'quaff' is a far from common verb these days. It's so old-fashioned that it's almost archaic.
