Our face dropped

What does "our faces dropped" mean?
We tried to keep up appearances, but the moment we opened the door to the outside and let in the glare, our faces dropped. I held on to the door and nodded for them to go first.
Is it a figurative expression for disappointment?

Do you and others really say "face dropped"? I think I am more familiar with "face fell" to indicate disappointment, and "jaw dropped" to indicate surprise (too tempted to say "shock 'n awe").
