Ought to v/s Should

Hello

I wanna ask about uses of "ought to". When do we use " ought to ". I've read about it and i know it's simillar to modal verb "should" but people often use "ought to" instead of "should" . Like -

I'm so sorry . I ought to have told you the truth.

Why ?

Please tell me when do we use ought to and when do we use should.

You can use 'ought to' almost anywhere you can use 'should'. Where I live people prefer 'should', so I hardly ever hear 'ought to'.

Note: You have to use 'should' and not 'ought to' when it is "evaluative should", that is, as a substitute for the mandative construction (i.e., present subjunctive).
