Otherwise/couldn't help ...

Hi

A man was telling a woman that one guy was very distraught when his son got ill. She said it's not true because she was at his place on the day when his son was being taken to hospital and the man was calm.

The man she was talking to said:

Miss, if you were there, you must know
otherwise. His wife said he was so much upset that he
couldn’t help to get together what was wanted, had to be
sent to carry the boy downstairs and then tried to insist
upon getting into the car and going with them.

Is he trying to tell her: if you were there, you probably noticed something different?

Does it mean that he was unable to help others and collect the things they wanted from him? I think it's about packing his son's stuff to hospital.

Hi Newguest Yes. He says that though she says she was there she did not understand his actual condition. In my estimation it means he could not think of the things he should be doing then as he was extremely nervous.

Hi,

An unrelated comment.

A man was telling a woman that one guy was very distraught when his son got ill. This sounds like you want to emphasize that the man told the woman there was one guy, not two guys, not three guys, etc.

Thanks Clive. I'll try to keep that in mind.
