Otherwise

"Computer-education advocates forsake this optimistic notion for a pessimism that betrays their otherwise cheery outlook."

What's otherwise mean here? Is it significant in the sentence?

Is it the same as " You have to hurry up, otherwise you will be last for school?"

What about "Computer-education advocates forsake this optimistic notion for a pessimism that betrays their cheery outlook?"

Please give me some examples

Many thanks!!!!
